The refractory linings of aluminium melting and holding furnaces have seen some major changes in recent decades. This paper reviews the current trends in furnace refractory linings and how these linings have developed in terms of refractory selection, design principles and construction techniques.
In particular the refractory requirements of specific areas of the furnace lining are detailed with various refractory lining options to match operational requirements being discussed.
Finally the importance of proper furnace refractory maintenance and regular cleaning are discussed with some examples of the latest maintenance materials and installation techniques being given.
